Five Minute Fridays: Hands

Once again I’m joining Lisa Jo Baker on Five Minute Fridays

What’s 5 Minute Fridays?

Fellow Blogger Alia describes it like this:

On Fridays we write. And sometimes it goes all over the place and we let it. We get messy and real and sometimes we cry and sometimes we laugh but we get it done week after week. We show up and write free.

Five minutes on one prompt. We silence the critic and the audience, we make peace with our mistakes and our word tense that goes in and out when we type fast. We don’t overthink or edit or make a fuss. We just believe words spilled are worth something even if they come out like madness. Join us?

Today’s Prompt is HANDS

Ready…GO

My hands are not pretty. My nails are very short. I don’t bite my nails but I can’t simply keep them long. Having a toddler and a house to look after, and not to say blog…don’t really leave a chance for long nails. It might be possible but perhaps I’m not used to.

Even though I don’t consider my hands beautiful, I’m glad God doesn’t look for the outwards…the appearance. I think He’ll look more at what I can do with them.  I’m blessed to have them both and totally healthy.

“The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

I believe hands say so much about what is going on in our hearts and in our minds. Open hands? Fists? …they truly reflect an emotion, don’t they?

I like what Max Lucado wrote in his book Just Like Jesus. He wrote perceptively about the power of our hands.

In essence he wrote:

We can touch gently…or we can slap with anger. We can write loving, encouraging notes…or write sarcastic and mean letters. We can give gifts…or we can steal. We can hold out our hands in a welcoming gesture…or hold them stiffly by our sides. We can hold them restfully on our laps or wring them in distress. We can ball them into fists or hold someone’s hand.

Our hands say so much about what is going on inside our hearts and minds. What are your hands saying about you today?

  1. A very expressive post on hands, faith, and the role they play in our lives. The quote from Max Lucado is inspiring.
It is what is the good inside that inspires our hands to help, comfort, pray.
I have short fingernails (ugly, splitty nails) — easier to type. Cuts, burns, scars. My hands have done good works. Good works I hope to continue doing.

  2. My hands probably look much like yours. Little ones (growing fast) and a house (and garden) to keep up with. I would not trade any of it for manicured hands. 🙂

    Wonderful post…..as always!!
